Why Dryer Balls? And Where did Snowmen come from anyway?

Dryer balls are an alternative option to what some people consider to be harmful, dryer sheets and liquid softener. There are a few different types but we will be using wool dryer balls for our December workshop.

To use, toss 3 – 6 of them in the dryer with your wet clothes to speed up drying time, reduce static and soften clothes without harmful chemicals.

Alone, they will not add a scent to your clothes. The scent may be one reason you choose dryer sheets or liquid fabric softener. Instead of putting those synthetic fragrances on your skin, drop some essential oils on to your dryer balls to leave a light, natural aroma on your clothing, towels and linens. Think, relaxing lavender on your bedding to calm your mind before drifting off to sleep.

Dryer balls will last for over 1000 loads before needing to be replaced.

Dryer Balls save energy by shortening drying time.

Dryer Balls will not coat the inside of your dryer or cause a waxy build up in your lint trap.

There are many claims that fabric softener and dryer sheets contain carcinogens, can disrupt the endocrine system, cause skin irritations and trigger conditions like eczema and asthma.

Giving this snowman gift is not only super cute but also pretty useful and perfect for the health conscious!

Now, on to the cute part. Where did Snowmen come from?

Apparently I am not the only one who was curious! Bob Ekstien wrote the book, “History of the Snowman,” which was published in 2007 and then followed it up with The Illustrated History of the Snowman in 2018. - I would be lying if I told you I did not just put one of these books on hold at the library.

No one knows who invented the first snowman but it is believed that they originated in medieval times as the first illustration of a snowman found is from 1380 in “The Book of Hours.” Of course I looked the illustration up and at first, I was astounded by the beauty of the book (seriously, google it!)… and then I found what I was looking for and learned that while snowmen are a cute winter accent in today's day in age, they actually have a pretty dark past in some parts of the world.

It has been reported that in 1494 Michelangelo was instructed to build a snowman. While it was not the first one ever created it is widely known as the “greatest snowman ever built.” In the 1400’s snow was a free art supply.

I don’t know how snowmen came to be a thing but there are quite a few interesting facts about them. If nothing more, now you have some unique conversation starters for holiday parties! Don't forget to sign up for the workshop!
